Cooking up reading success!
Learning to read is a lot like cooking a recipe. You need to have the correct amount of ingredients to achieve the desired end result. If you lack an ingredient, the recipe just doesn't taste right. A "dash" of this and a "pinch" of that might not be the perfect balance. The same thing happens with students as they learn. They may have mastered a component of literacy, but need more practice with another to put together the perfect balance for mastery.
Students need to have a strong background in different areas of literacy called "The Big 5"
1. Phonemic Awareness- words are made up of sounds by putting the sounds together and taking them apart.
2. Phonics- sounds with written letters.
3. Fluency- reading words smoothly and accurately.
4. Comprehension- understanding what you read.
5. Vocabulary- learning the meaning of new words.
I hope this site gives you some additional support to balance your child's learning and give you a recipe for success!
